Empowerment of Business Community

Since its inception, Centre for Peace, Development and Reforms (CPDR) had decided to work with the business community and chambers of commerce and industry in Azad Jammu and Kashmir to generate fresh ideas and bridge the gap between business community and policy-makers in general. In this connection, CPDR decided to support nascent cross Line of Control trade, besides, providing consultancy to the Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) to organize events and meetings with the policy-makers in Islamabad and Muzaffarabad.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) can be divided into two geographical clusters; the Northern part comprises of the capital Muzaffarabad and Poonch while Mirpur and Kotli are located in the Southern part. Economic dynamics of the northern part are dependent on public sector services in Muzaffarabad & private sector services in Poonch division, with common partial reliance on tourism and agriculture.

Cross LoC traders meet in Tashkent, seek restoration of intra-Kashmir trade

Various representatives of regional chambers of commerce and industry, associations and federations of cross-LoC traders and some independent entrepreneurs from Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-adminstered Kashmir met for ‘Jammu and Kashmir Cross-Line of Control Business Track II’ in Tashkent, Uzbekistan between June 23-25.

A barter trade connecting people across Kashmir’s “Berlin Wall” is perilously close to being shut down. In October, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson landed in South Asia on the ninth anniversary of a rare “Berlin Wall moment” in Kashmir. In October 2008, Indian and Pakistani leaders opened up the heavily-guarded Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir for small-scale, barter trade.
