Debate over the report

The report generated an intensive debate about the current state of affairs in Azad Jammu and Kashmir viz-a-viz its relationship with the government of Pakistan and peoples’ aspiration for the empowerment of their government and legislatures. The report was presented in Mirpur, Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad and Islamabad for public scrutiny and critical analysis in the roundtables.

Impact assessment

It has always been hard to quantify advocacy work and make its impact assessment. However, in this case, on the basis of strong evidence, it can be said with confidence that the CPDR Report and subsequent interaction with the opinion leaders in the form of divisional level dialogues has certainly left its mark in AJK and largely changed the talking points in local politics.

E-petition: Empowering Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K)

In May 2014, CPDR initiated an E-petition aimed to moblise public opinion in favor of the constitutional reforms. The petition generated huge interest among the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. 1259 citizens of AJK signed this petition, including sitting ministers, government officials, politicians, students, lawyers and activists living all over the world.

We, the undersigned, call upon the respective governments of Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) to take immediate steps to devolve and transfer the executive, legislative and financial powers of the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Council to AJ&K Legislative Assembly and the government of AJ&K to establish its character as a responsive, representative, accountable and participatory democracy.
